LUKE TOWAN - GALLERYIf you've been exploring my website you will have realized that it's actually much easier than it looks to be able to build and create some amazing and very realistic models and dioramas.
However the craftsmanship put into the models is not always evident and it takes just as much skill and dedication to get the right photo. I've been modelling from a very early age however I only got serious about building dioramas in 2013 and from there I've been taking every opportunity I can to learn and develop my techniques and skills. Below is a selection of images from more recent dioramas that display the results you too can achieve from watching some of my tutorials. |
THE SECRET WATERHOLE
TIMELESS
The model itself took quite a while to build, there were many different tools and techniques that I used to achieve the final result. As miniature modelers we often try to find the cheap way of getting the results we want however sometimes to get the best results we need to use the right tools and sometimes that comes at a cost...
However, if I could get consistently good results similar to the diorama created here then I think that it's money and time well spent.
My favorite technique used in the process of creating the diorama was using the chain and weathering it with Ferric Chloride, I originally intended on using an airbrush to paint color onto it however that posed a few problems mainly the chains becoming glued together with paint. Somehow I thought back to realistic scenery volume three when I weathered the aluminum foil with Ferric Chloride and just like I could have hoped it worked perfectly. Don't be afraid to try new things. To watch the video of the creation of this diorama you can click on the button below:

CROSSING IN VICTORIA
Built in October 2016, this diorama depicts a typical Australia scene that you would see travelling around country Victoria.
The diorama is large in comparison to my other models measuring 40cm wide by 63cm long and even though there are 17 individual road signs on the model they don't look out of place. It took a total of approximately 15 hours to build over a couple of weeks however due to the added task of filming the tutorial video while also building the model greatly added to the total build time. YELLOWSTONE PARK
I was always fascinated with the popular kids show 'Yogi Bear' when I was younger, I even wanted to be a park ranger at one stage and I wonder if that show had anything to do with that?
I made this diorama to showcase the tall pine trees and the paved road, I photographed it at an old pine plantation that has since been re-purposed as a camp ground... How appropriate :) To watch the tutorial on making this diorama you can click here:

MOTSCHALL STOCKFEED
One of my first jobs was working at a stock feed throwing hay bales and I guess a lot of my inspiration for a good number of my models is draw upon my past. This model is no exception to that! I learnt many good lessons in life working on the land and I carry those experiences with me even as an airline pilot.

THE END OF SUMMER
Sometimes certain models and dioramas give a particular feeling and emotion when viewed, often the emotions are different for each individual.
This model gives me a sense that it's late in the afternoon, the sun is going down and summer is coming to an end with cold winter nights ahead. People often ask why the police car is at the house... that is a story I'll let you decide upon :)
This diorama was built to showcase the hedges in the foreground and if you'd like to watch the tutorial click here:

NO THROUGH ROAD
This was my first real successful diorama, prior to this piece I still didn't have a solid method for making truly realistic scenes. The real breakthrough was achieving a good dirt road texture with the dried up muddy puddle.
The diorama is very small, no bigger than an A4 piece of paper yet when photographed at just the right angle with the right light it looks a lot bigger than it is. There is a tutorial about making this diorama you can watch here:
