Realistic Scenery 5 - A Drive Through Yellowstone

During the process of making the paved roads video I decided to make a complete diorama and film the entire process, similar to the previous 'Realistic Scenery' videos this one will be an all encompassing tutorial. What you see is what you get.
It took a while to finish this model for a couple of reasons!
  • Firstly, making the road is a process that requires patience. When you first lay the road using the 'smooth it' you'll need to give the road 24 hrs minimum to dry. I had to give it 2 days due to the cold and damp area that I was working in, then when you paint the road with the top coat you'll need to give it another 24 hrs as the paint moistens the road again and if you try draw the road markings on the surface too soon you'll leave a groove in the surface!
  • Second, I had a busy week at work, as much as I love making models unfortunately it doesn't pay the bills rather it creates new bills! So of to work I go :)
However... if you would like to throw a helping hand you can support me through patreon, completely voluntary but I will always appreciate any assistance. www.patreon.com/luketowan

The paved road turned out fantastic, the trees and surrounding scenery fit in well and do a good job of complimenting each other. The filming of the entire process took quite some time, and I have many hours of footage to sort and edit but the good news is I'm about one third done with the editing.
Stay tuned for 'Realistic Scenery Volume 5 - A drive through Yellowstone'... the name might change? Should be finished in about a week from now :)

Cheers

I'm quite a way through the filming process for the next tutorial which will be focused on paved roads. I was actually hoping to have it finished this week while I was on holidays... However, holidays as they are involve a lot of lazing around and visiting family, so progress has been a little slower than I would have preferred.

Nonetheless, I will be quite busy on Monday and Tuesday next week in an attempt to finish filming and have the video posted around Thursday or Friday at the latest.
I'm liking the look of the road so far and I'm looking forward to posting the video and sharing with you my technique. I've decided to go for the commercial option this time for making the road, there are a couple of benefits to this -
  • Materials are easy to get.
  • The materials remain consistent. Which is great if you make a section of road now and then come back to make other sections at a later date.
  • Due to the commercial availability, anyone from anywhere in the world can easily replicate the tutorial and achieve the same great results.
Stay tuned for the next tutorial.
Also I have to give a big shout out to all my 'Patrons', you guys have no idea how much you motivate me and it's great to have such supportive people out there! THANK YOU :)

If your not a patron and would also like to throw a little support my way feel free to check out my support page on Patreon :) https://www.patreon.com/luketowan?ty=h
Every little bit really helps :)

Tall Forest Pine Trees

Shortly I’ll be posting a video on YouTube giving you a very detailed tutorial on how to make these fantastic pine trees.
If you’re a current patron and follow me on ‘Patreon’ then you will actually be able to watch the video right now. So if you want to watch now you might consider supporting me on Patreon or if you can wait I'll be posting this video to everyone on YouTube at approximately 9am EDT on the 6th of May in the US.
The whole process is actually quite simple and the results more than speak for themselves!

I especially like the look of the trunk, the wire brush technique works really well against the balsa wood as it's very soft and very easy to work with. I've seen many ways of making a believable wood grain in a wooden dowel but nothing quite as easy as using balsa wood. Color matching also plays a very important part in creating a believable trunk in miniature.

The base color for the trunk is Rust-Oleum Satin Espresso and the highlights which are dry brushed across the top is Vallejo Israeli Sand Grey. Those colors seem to work well together and complement each other.
Overall I'm quite happy with the final result, I plan to use these trees in my next big video which will be 'Realistic Scenery Volume - 5", it will be my biggest diorama so far but I have big plans for it.

Don't forget to go check out 'Patreon' if you want to help and support me, not to mention watch my tutorials 48 hours before they get published to YouTube.

Cheers
Luke
